Peak presenting tips: Kirryn Zetrna
Kirryn Zetrna is a dynamic conference speaker and corporate facilitator. She caught up with Peak Presenting Director, Melinda Smith at the Professional Speakers Australia’s (PSA) annual convention #CADENCE25 to share her top tips for presenting at your peak.
How did you get into being a speaker?
While others had their bar jobs after school, I worked for a bank in telephone banking. While studying Commerce at Sydney Uni, I worked in frontline banking roles until a chance breakfast forum introduced me to a Corporate Communication Manager who opened the door to my first internal communication job.
From there, I was hooked. For the next 16+ years, if you could communicate it – I worked on it. Major campaigns reaching 40,000 employees, change programs, sustainability, marketing, and social media. I worked across banking, government and small business, always focused on helping messages land and cultures thrive.
In 2016, I started my own business as a corporate facilitator and keynote speaker. These days, I work as a conference speaker with organisations and leaders to strengthen communication, build trust, and foster cultures of connection – especially in today’s noisy, fast-paced world.
Why did you want to focus on keynote presenting?
There’s nothing more rewarding then the a-ha moment of an audience. I love helping people see the world differently – to feel inspired, and more importantly, equipped to make change. I wouldn’t have thought of it as a career, except a friend of mine was a speaker, and I became captivated by the design and delivery of a good presentation that inspires and transforms.
Your favourite or most memorable presentation or public speaking moment?
I love to travel, so the most memorable speaking experiences for me always align with fun locations. Speaking at the Housing Industry of Australia conference in Hamilton Island was a real highlight. They knew how to throw a conference. From street party spillovers to fancy conference set ups, to celebrity emcees, and amazing staging – it was a fun experience.
What makes a good presentation?
A good presentation weaves together logic (the why, what and how), emotional connection (stories and metaphors), and a sense of rhythm that draws the audience in. Participation – big or small – helps people feel like they’re part of something, not just watching it. And for me, it has to be practical. I want people to leave with an idea they’ll try tomorrow.
Your top tips for being a great speaker and presenting effectively?
Don’t aim to impress– aim to connect. The best presentations feel like a conversation, not a show. And it will seem even more natural and effortless, when you’ve put in the work of preparation and practice. And most important, show up as you. Be inspired by others but don’t try to be a copy. Being you, being real, is your superpower – it makes you memorable and distinctive.
How do you relax outside of work?
My topic is connection, and my hobbies are connection. Time with my family, catch-ups with friends, and creative outlets like writing fiction. I’ve been slowly chipping away at a novel since COVID… watch this space! If I’m honest, I also love naps!
